I decided to brave Walmart today and "test" my local Walmart's knowledge of their new coupon policy. I had a few different types of coupons I wanted to use as testers:
1. Internet coupon: I used the $3/1 Nivea Body Wash that was available on redplum a while back that met the coupon policy criteria.
2. Manufacturer coupons that exceeded the price of the item - I used the $5/1 Any Similac Product coupon. I was curious to see if they would actually give me cash for the "excess".
3. Catalinas printed from a competitors' register-I had a $2/1 Revlon Beauty Tools Walgreen CAT coupon that met the coupon policy criteria. Unfortunately I couldn't find any Revlon Tools (looked around and gave up).
Test Results:
The cashier I had seemed like a new hire (poor girl) but she did have a "trainer" with her. For my transaction, the new hire stepped aside and the trainer took over.
1. Internet coupon: The trainer right off the bat said they did not accept internet coupons. I politely pointed to the sign right above her head that stated that they do. She responded by saying that it was a "copy" without verifying the coupon first. After her pow wow with her supervisor, she said she'd accept the coupon if it scanned. Needless to say, it scanned perfectly.
2. Manufacturer coupons that exceeded the price of the item - Trainer started off saying she can't accept the coupon. I pulled out the corporate policy which she brought to her supervisor. In short, the store said "NO" to cash but accepted the coupon & allowed the overage to be used toward other items. On a side note, overage & cashback is mentioned under "guidelines & limitations"; I'm guessing this means it's the store manager's discretion?!
3. Catalinas printed from a competitors' register - Could not test.
Conclusion:
Walmart is hot or cold depending on what store you go to and what cashier you get. On the most part, I found that the cashiers are not well informed about their coupon policy and therefore tend to make up their own rules. If you plan on a Walmart trip, I highly recommend you bring the corporate coupon policy with you and be prepared to politely
