I sent an e-mail inquiring how they handle refunds to the stores when the coupon is a few cents more than the price of the item. Ex, Gain 1.00 coupon, used on the small 97 cent bottle. (Walmart)
Here is the answer I received:
Thanks for contacting P&G with questions on redeeming coupons, Linda. We appreciate your interest in how stores are reimbursed for the coupons they accept. We reimburse stores for the full face value of the coupons they redeem (plus the normal retailer's handling fee), When the face value of the coupon exceeds the retail price of the item, it is our expectation that the item would be free to the shopper (plus sales tax) but the difference would not be paid in cash or deducted from the receipt. We are aware that various stores handle this situation differently depending on their cash register system. The final decision is up to the particular retailer. The majority of our money saving coupons do not exceed the value of the product. Sometimes stores develop their own policies regarding coupon redemption; or they aren't familiar with our coupon redemption rules. If that's the case, you might want to encourage the store manager to contact our coupon redemption center directly.
I hope this helps. Thanks again for stopping by.
